Practical benchmarking in DEA using artificial DMUs
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is one of the most efficient tools for efficiency measurement which can be employed as a benchmarking method with multiple inputs and outputs. However, DEA does not provide any suggestions for improving efficient units, nor does it provide any benchmark or reference point for these efficient units. Impracticability of these benchmarks under environmental conditions is another challenge of benchmarking by DEA. The current study attempts to extend basic models for benchmarking of efficient units under practical conditions. To this end, we construct the practical production possibility set (PPPS) by employing the concept of artificial decision-making units and adding these decision-making units to the production possibility set (PPS) such that these artificial units satisfy all environmental constraints. Then, the theorems related to PPPS and their proofs are provided. Moreover, as a secondary result of this study, efficient units can be ranked according to their practical efficiency scores.

Within-group common benchmarking using DEA
Cook and Zhu (2007) extend the DEA structure to apply to the more general setting where DMUs fall into distinct groups whose members experience similar circumstances. As these authors state, in those cases the DMUs of a group are to be treated uniformly in terms of multiplier allocation. In the same contextual setting, the present paper proposes a DEA-based approach which is primarily focused o...
متن کاملRanking efficient DMUs using minimizing distance in DEA
In many applications, ranking of decision making units (DMUs) is a problematic technical task procedure to decision makers in data envelopment analysis (DEA), especially when there are extremely efficient DMUs. In such cases, many DEA models may usually get the same efficiency score for different DMUs. Hence, there is a growing interest in ranking techniques yet. The main purpose of this paper ...
متن کاملStability of RTS of Efficient DMUs in DEA with Fuzzy
An important property of production functions is the concept return to scale (RTS) as found in the literature. There are two common variations RTS in data envelopment analysis (DEA) used, constant return to scale (CRS) and variation return to scale (VRS). The envelopment surface in BCC model is VRS and this is the result of the presence of the convexity constraint in the dual model and, equival...
متن کاملA DEA with Categorical DMUs Based Model in Profit Sharing
Submitted: Jun 12, 2013; Accepted: Jul 23, 2013; Published: Jul 25, 2013 Abstract: Companies around the world normally assign a portion of their benefits to their employees. This policy is used as an encouragement to increase the motivation of employees. If the profit sharing seems unfair, its expected results will be lost. In this paper, a model is developed to determine a desirable profit sha...
متن کاملDEA models for non-homogeneous DMUs with different input configurations
The data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology is a benchmarking tool where it is generally assumed that decision making units (DMUs) constitute a homogeneous set; specifically, it is assumed that all DMUs have a common (input, output) bundle. In earlier work by the authors the issue of non-homogeneity on the output side was investigated. There we examined a set of steel fabrication plants whe...
متن کاملRanking DMUs by Comparing DEA Cross-Efficiency Intervals Using Entropy Measures
Cross-efficiency evaluation, an extension of data envelopment analysis (DEA), can eliminate unrealistic weighing schemes and provide a ranking for decision making units (DMUs). In the literature, the determination of input and output weights uniquely receives more attentions. However, the problem of choosing the aggressive (minimal) or benevolent (maximal) formulation for decision-making might ...
